THE FAILURE OF
More than 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT.
LGBTQ youth are twice as likely to be sexually assaulted.
More than 75% of these youth ended up on the streets because
they were kicked out or rejected by their families.
The largest percentage of youth who are homeless identify as LGBTQ. According to a recent study from Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, LGBTQ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than non-LGBTQ youth. These youth report that they are on the streets because they were not accepted at home once they came out to their families. Its as if one day their families loved them, and then the next day that love was gone.
And for what reason?
Unfortunately, once these youth find themselves on the streets, even though they are the largest community of homeless youth, they are the most underserved. According to TrueColorsFund.org, 99% of homeless youth providers report working with LGBTQ youth but there are less than 100 shelters nationwide that specialize in services for LGBTQ youth. While LGTBQ youth can get services at any shelter, LGBTQ youth are more susceptible to abuse, rape, and violence, and benefit from safe, understanding shelters.
