ISSUES

There can be no keener revelation
of a society's soul

Than the way in which it treats its children.

WHY DO YOUTH END UP ON THE STREETS?

Most children end up on the streets for 3 reasons:
Home doesn’t exist anymore
Home isn’t safe anymore
Home doesn’t want them anymore
This might sound over simplified, but with such a huge issue,
simplification sometimes is the key.

Home doesn’t exist anymore

Whether because of death in the family, economic troubles, drugs or other factors, many youth find themselves without a home anymore. Some end up on the streets with their parents, but unfortunately many more end up alone. Home also disappears when a child who has become a part of the foster care system ages out and they are no longer qualified for services and have to leave their foster home. Many times they are given a black plastic trash bag and 30 minutes to pack up everything they own and leave.

Home isn’t safe anymore

Many youth end up on the streets because home is just to dangerous for them to stay there. Whether it be due to sexual abuse, drug abuse, physical or mental abuse, many children feel that the streets are safer than being in heir own homes. Unfortunately, this is rarely true.

Home doesn’t want them anymore

Roughly 45% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ and report being forced to leave their homes once coming out as LGBTQ to their parents. There are also many parents who just realize, too late, that they don’t want to be parents and the child ends up in a home that doesn’t want them there.

What forces a youth to be homeless?

The causes of youth homelessness are as complex and unique as the youth themselves, but here are a few of the critical issues these youth face that we as a culture have to fix.
